My Epic Asian Adventure

Im back from my Asia Adventure and guys you need to do this! It was epic and the good news is I am doing it all again over Christmas and you can come!

Embarking on a 21-day journey across five enchanting countries was not merely a trip; it was a profound voyage back to a city brimming with nostalgia and awaiting new adventures. Hong Kong, a city that pulsates with life, welcomed me back into its vibrant embrace. Having lived and worked here during the bustling 1990s, the anticipation of rediscovering its charm was nothing short of exhilarating. From the moment I stepped off the plane, the vivid colours and dynamic energy of the city wrapped around me, reminding me of the captivating allure that had seized my heart years ago.

Hong Kong: A City That Never Sleeps

Hong Kong stands as a testament to the indomitable spirit of a city that never sleeps. The streets are alive, a dazzling kaleidoscope of neon lights dancing across the skyline, and markets overflowing with a vibrant array of goods. Each corner turned unveils new discoveries, from ingeniously transformed spaces hosting art installations to pop-up markets that beckon with curiosity and wonder.

Lorraine’s Tip: Dive into the culinary scene of Hong Kong. Whether it’s the sizzling delights from street food stalls or the exquisite offerings of high-end restaurants, the bold and unforgettable flavours are sure to tantalize your taste buds.

During my stay, I was fortunate to indulge in some of the best dining experiences the city has to offer. The New World Millennium Hotel, my abode, boasted one of the most sumptuous dinner buffets in Hong Kong. The spread was a feast for the senses, with an array of seafood and international cuisines that were as visually stunning as they were delectable. A lunch of hand-made, all-you-can-eat Dim Sum left me in awe, each bite of these meticulously crafted morsels transporting me to culinary heaven.

What truly sets Hong Kong apart, beyond the sensory delights, is its authenticity and the warmth of its people. I had concerns that this might have changed, but the city felt as welcoming as ever. There’s a palpable sense of community and warmth that instantly makes you feel at home, with locals going out of their way to make you feel welcome, guiding you to hidden gems or sharing stories that enrich your understanding of their culture.

Hong Kong is also lauded as one of the safest places in the world, with very little violent crime, making it an excellent destination for solo travellers and couples alike. The city’s efficient public transport system and well-lit streets ensure that exploring, even after dark, is both easy and reassuring.

The New World Millennium Hotel offered more than just accommodations; it was a sanctuary amidst the hustle and bustle. The impeccable service and comfortable lodgings made it clear why this hotel is a cherished choice among visitors. The harbour view from my room provided a mesmerizing window to the ever-changing skyline, particularly enchanting as night fell.

As I bid farewell to Hong Kong, the journey continued, leaving behind memories and carrying forward a renewed admiration for this incredible place I once called home.

Vietnam: A Tapestry of Cultural Richness

The adventure sailed forward aboard the cruise ship Celebrity Solstice, taking us through the marvels of Vietnam—from the stunning vistas of Ha Long Bay to the ancient allure of Hoi An and the bustling energy of Ho Chi Minh City.

Ha Long Bay, with its thousands of towering limestone islands, was like stepping into another realm, especially mesmerizing at sunset and under a starlit sky. The beauty of this place promises a return even before you've departed.

Our exploration took us further to Danang, but with a keen desire for deeper cultural immersion, we ventured to the ancient city of Hoi An. Beyond its renowned tailor shops and lively streets, Hoi An vibrates with markets that are a feast for the senses. The vibrant colours of fresh produce, aromatic scents of local spices, and the friendly calls of vendors create an unforgettable tapestry of experiences.

Lorraine’s Tip: Engage in the artistic and culinary workshops in Hoi An. Whether it’s learning traditional Vietnamese painting techniques on coconut paper or participating in a cooking class, these experiences offer a deep dive into the local culture and cuisine.

In Ho Chi Minh City, the dynamic blend of past and present creates a multifaceted experience for travellers. The city’s colonial architecture, set against the backdrop of modern skyscrapers, narrates the story of Vietnam’s evolution. The War Remnants Museum offers a powerful glimpse into the impact of the Vietnam War, while markets like Ben Thanh encapsulate the vibrant essence of Saigon’s street life.

Thailand: A Contrast of Serenity and Vigor

Our journey brought us to Thailand, where Bangkok’s serene temples and bustling markets paint a city of contrasts. The legendary street food, from spicy pad Thai to sweet mango sticky rice, offers a taste of Thailand’s rich culinary heritage.

Like the rebel I am, I jumped ship for a couple of days while the ship was at sea and took advantage of the very inexpensive regional flights and headed to Chiang Mai. It’s the jewel of Northern Thailand and presented an enchanting blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. The Sunday Night Street Market reminded me of European Christmas markets with the artisan vendors and the food stalls .I stayed at 137 pillars.  This special hotel isn't just a place to stay; it's a peek into history with a modern twist. Imagine sleeping in a beautifully restored building that's been around since the 1800s, surrounded by 137 stunning pillars. It's like stepping back in time, but with all the comfy perks of today.

Each of the 30 suites here feels like your own private haven, mixing old-style charm with new-age luxury. Think big, airy rooms with lovely wooden floors, victorian roll top baths and romantic outdoor showers,  giant windows, and your very own spot to chill outside. And the details! Every corner has something cool that tells a story, from the art on the walls to the fancy carvings.

We joined the ship again and headed to the stunning island Koh Samui.

Koh Samui: An Island Paradise

Koh Samui, with its clear waters and friendly ambiance, captured my heart, embodying the essence of a dreamy island retreat. The experience of exploring this island, with its stunning hotels and mix of elegant and local shops, was a testament to the joy of discovery. I added this to my list of must explore more later. That is the beauty of a cruise, like a sample tasting, you like it you can order more later!

Singapore: A Dazzling Finale

Our journey ended in one of my all time favourite cities -  Singapore, right as the Chinese New Year celebrations were starting. The city was alive with lights, colours, and the excitement of the upcoming festivities. The food, the decorations, and the spirit of the city were all geared up for the New Year, making it a dazzling end to our trip.

A city-state that dazzles with its futuristic skyline, lush green spaces, and melting pot of cultures. Staying at the brand new Artyzen Hotel added an extra layer of luxury and comfort to the experience. The hotel itself is a testament to Singapore's modernity and style, with its magnificent rooftop pool offering panoramic views of the city. A notable design feature throughout the hotel is the high ceilings in each room, enhancing the sense of space and exclusivity. The hotel also offers unique Terrace Suites with private garden terraces, embodying the concept of "bungalows in the sky" and blending colonial-era villa aesthetics with contemporary design elements

We were very lucky to have the chance to dine in their superb Restaurant Quenino led by the culinary expertise of Chef Victor Liong offering a menu that captures the essence of contemporary Asia with a twist. Every dish was perfectly balanced and divine. We even got to meet the chef.

Lorraine’s Tip: Explore Gardens by the Bay for a fusion of nature and avant-garde architecture, and delve into the cultural districts for a deeper understanding of Singapore’s diverse communities.

As this 21-day journey across five countries came to a close, the experiences and memories gathered along the way were a testament to the endless wonders our world holds. From the vibrant streets of Hong Kong to the serene landscapes of Chiang Mai and the modern marvels of Singapore, each destination offered unique insights and inspirations. This voyage was a reminder of the beauty that lies in discovery, urging us to explore further and immerse ourselves in the rich tapestry of our planet’s cultures and landscapes.

If this inspires you to want to follow in my footsteps reach out as I will be recreating this again in January 2025 and you can join me. The trip will be in two parts including the chance to experience Asia at New year.
